Introduction
A subsite is a special part of your website for a specific target group. A subsite has the following features:
- Navigation and menu items specific for the subsite
- Different footer content
- Different styling & branding
You can create a subsite from every main menu item. When navigating to the item, a visitor automatically enters the subsite.
In this article we will show you how to create a subsite for the submenu "Corporate" in the example below.
When properly set up, the subsite will look something like this:
You can see that the submenu "Corporate" of the main website has become the main navigation of the subsite when you use the hamburger menu.
All other menu items of the main website are gone here, and replaced by a link "Return to website" at the top right.
The header, navigation and footer have different styling and content.
Creating a subsite
To create a subsite, first add a new main menu item of the type "Subsite" in the "Menus" module, or change an existing menu item to the type "Subsite".
- A subsite is always structured under a main menu item.
- All (sub)menu items & pages you add within this main menu item will be part of the subsite.
After you created the main menu item of the type "subsite" and all underlying submenu items and pages, it is time to create alternate content for the footer and service menu of the subsite. A new module called "Subsite Content" should now be available in the "Website" menu in the dashboard just for that purpose:
Add a new item, and select the correct main menu item (in this case "Zakelijk"):
Select a subsite page as the “landing page”. Your subsite logo will link to that page.
All footer and service menu content you add here will be displayed on all pages in the “Zakelijk” menu:
Design & Branding
You can create multiple subsites in your website, but it is advised to not go overboard here. A change in layout and branding can confuse the visitor.
A subsite uses the same templates and overall structure as the rest of your website. These templates can however be styled specifically for the subsite. You have the following options:
- Different color scheme in header, navigation & footer
- Different logo in header
- Different fonts, font colors and background colors in content areas
Because the entire look & feel of the subsite can be different from the main website, these options need to be implemented by a Peppered Consultant.
