The new search engine

The new search engine brings huge website performance gains and comes with fuzzy seach features

💡

This feature will be released during release 227 to a small group of selected venues. Full release of the new search engine is scheduled for release 228

🔍 A smarter search engine that won't let your website buckle under pressure

What changed?

  • Our brand new search engine running on its own dedicated server, completely separate from your main site
  • Heavy search queries no longer slow your website down, especially during busy on-sales
  • Indexed results load faster and deliver cleaner, more meaningful matches
  • Eliminates false positives where a short search term accidentally matched part of a longer, unrelated word
  • Fuzzy search finds matches based on similarity rather than exact spelling
  • Phase 1 (release 227) covers themes, pages & stories, people, and courses

What's coming later? Phase 2 (expected in release 228) will bring productions and events into the new engine too. We're also planning to power your what’s on pages later, which will bring advanced filtering features, which will be possible because of this foundation.

How do I use it?

  • No action needed. We're continuing to test in the background.
  • Want to try it early? Get in touch and we'll activate it for your site
  • We're aiming to make this the default for everyone by April

🤓What to know how it works under the hood?:

Text analysis enables Elasticsearch to perform full-text search - meaning it returns alll relevant results rather than only exact matches. For example, if you search for “Quick fox jumps”, you probably want the document that contains “A quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”, and you might also want documents that contain related words like “fast fox” or “foxes leap”. Smarter matching, better results for your visitors.

Take note! This is a Beta version. If you spot something odd, please use the ‘Leave feedback’ link at the top of any CMS module.

Activate or de-activate the new search engine using the toggle in control panel > admin only features (dashboard?cat=control_panel&action=check&module_code=ADMIN)
